Terms of Engagement and Class Information
Metodos de Aprendizagem Alternativa Unipessoal, LDA, SMMALZ (Singapore Math Methods, Activities & Learning) is an educational company based in Cascais, Portugal, offering a variety of math-focused learning experiences for students in Grades 1 to 8.Our services include private one-to-one mathematics tutoring, Singapore Math workshops, and exciting Escape Room–style Math Quests for ages 7 to 14, immersive, educational, and fun themed activities designed to bring math to life through problem-solving and hands-on exploration.
Alongside tutoring, we also utilise our professional training and qualified expertise to create these original games and learning experiences entirely from scratch, ensuring high-quality, age-appropriate challenges that develop real mathematical thinking. Every program is built around a clear set of grade-level objectives, tailored to meet the individual needs of each learner. Using the Singapore Math CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract), we focus on developing strong problem-solving skills, building mathematical confidence, and nurturing a genuine love for learning.
At SMMALZ, we believe that math should be exciting, accessible, and rewarding. Whether your child needs extra support or is ready to extend their skills, our lessons and workshops are designed to help them thrive. Our group lessons are delivered in five- to six-week cycles, each covering specific mathematical topics. Sessions are designed to be visual, kinesthetic, and highly interactive, helping students develop a deep conceptual understanding of the foundational principles of mathematics from Grade 1 onwards.
A considerable amount of time and care is invested in ensuring that students are engaged and consistently progressing. This includes the use of high-quality resources that are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect the most effective and current teaching practices.
If your child is currently enrolled in school, SMMALZ also offers tailor-made tutoring sessions to support homework and address any learning gaps or misconceptions immediately.
Expectations of Parents
- Provide suitable conditions and encouragement at home to support your child’s learning and completion of homework.
- Confirm the agreed location for individual lessons prior to the start date — sessions can take place either at your home or at SMMALZ’s base in Cascais.
- Ensure your child is dropped off on time for each session (or a little earlier when required) and picked up promptly at the end of the session when specified, so that sessions can run smoothly and safely.
- Keep the teacher informed of any concerns or upcoming assessments so that we can adjust lesson plans or include revision sessions as needed.
- Sign and return the enrolment terms and consent form to confirm your child’s place in the program.
Resources
- SMMALZ provides all resources required for each lesson.
- Our materials are continuously updated in line with current research and best practices in mathematics education.
- If your child requires help with school homework, they should bring their materials to each session.
Assessments
All lessons are delivered by a qualified and experienced teacher.
SMMALZ employs the Singapore Math approach, using the CPA (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract) model for younger learners. For Key Stage 2 and above, we integrate HeyHi, an adaptive online tool from Singapore that helps identify and address misconceptions immediately.
Assessment for learning is central to our teaching. We use a combination of:
- Math Universal Screener Tests for number sense
- HeyHi adaptive assessments
- Teacher observations and feedback
These allow us to provide parents with clear, detailed feedback and ensure each child’s learning is purposeful and measurable.
