What Makes SMMALZ Different

At SMMALZ, children don’t just learn math — they learn how to think, problem-solve, and grow with confidence.

SMMALz — which stands for Singapore Math Methods, Activities & Learning, was created in 2023 to provide high-quality math enrichment and support to individual learners and small groups.

At SMMALZ, we offer a variety of workshop packages—such as Bar Models, Fact Fluency, After School Singapore Math Enrichment classes —each designed to target key mathematical concepts in engaging and effective ways. Our Enrichment Classes will help your child to prepare for International Math contest, such as Singapore & Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO), American Mathematics Olympiad (AMO), and Singapore Math Challenge (SMC). To make learning even more exciting, we also create custom, educational escape-room-style Math Quests, built entirely from scratch and tailored to different ages and topics. These immersive experiences combine fun with meaningful learning, giving children a chance to practise mathematical thinking in a hands-on, adventurous way.

We partner closely with families and schools to help every child thrive, whether they need a challenge to stretch their problem-solving skills or a spark to build confidence. We work with children between the ages of 6 and 14, focusing on building a strong foundation right from the start.

Teaching methods

At SMMALZ, our teaching is deeply rooted in the Singapore Math approach, which emphasizes progressive learning through the Concrete, Pictorial, and Abstract (CPA) stages. This proven structure helps children build strong conceptual understanding before moving on to symbolic and abstract reasoning. A core part of our method is developing number sense through number bonds, simple visual models that show how numbers can be broken apart and put back together. Number bonds make mental math more intuitive and form the foundation for success in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We also use the Bar Model Method, one of the most powerful problem-solving tools in Singapore Math. Bar models allow children to visualize word problems by turning written information into clear pictorial representations. This helps students understand relationships between quantities, choose effective strategies, and solve problems with confidence. Throughout all lessons, we incorporate heuristics, visuals, and structured strategies to support learners in thinking quantitatively and abstractly, while making connections to real-world situations. Our teaching is personalised and differentiated, with clear success criteria to guide progress and build confidence. No matter their starting point, students at SMMALZ gain the tools they need to become fluent, flexible, and independent mathematicians.

Why join us?

At SMMALZ, we go beyond traditional tutoring by developing strong, independent thinkers. Our students learn to:

Visualize and model problems using manipulatives and pictorial representations, turning abstract ideas into clear, understandable concepts.
Interpret and solve word problems, connecting mathematical thinking to real-life situations.
Think critically, evaluating information and approaching challenges with confidence.
Apply suitable heuristics, selecting strategies that help them navigate multi-step or unfamiliar problems.
Reason logically, considering different outcomes and making informed decisions based on given clues.
Develop metacognitive awareness, understanding how they think and how to adjust their approach for continuous improvement.
Our approach begins with an initial assessment to identify strengths, gaps, and learning needs. From there, we design tailor-made support that builds fluency, closes gaps, and ensures steady, meaningful progress.

Families choose SMMALZ because we make math click. Each session is personalised to your child’s needs, strengthening understanding, filling learning gaps, and building lasting confidence. Using the proven Singapore Math approach (CPA: Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract), we focus on deep reasoning and real problem-solving skills rather than rote memorisation. Whether your child needs support or is ready for a challenge, our goal is to help them grow into a confident, capable, and curious thinker who truly enjoys learning math.

We provide flexible scheduling to support busy families and offer individualized sessions to ensure every student receives the attention they need to progress with confidence. Above all, we foster an environment where math is more than a subject—it’s a passion, a journey of discovery, and a skill every child can master with joy.
